9th European NKOS Workshop
at ECDL 2010
Glasgow, 9th-10th September 2010

Proposals are invited for presentations and posters on work related to the themes of the workshop (see below).

Submission deadline: 14th June 2010
Notification of acceptance: 12th July 2010

Please email proposals (maximum 1000 words for presentations and 500 words for posters, including aims, methods, main findings, relevance to themes of workshop) by June 14th to Douglas Tudhope (dstudhope@glam.ac.uk). Proposals will be peer-reviewed by the program committee and notification of acceptance will be given by July 12th.

8th NKOS Workshop presentations available

All presentations and posters from the 8th European Networked Knowledge Organization Systems (NKOS) workshop, that took place at the ECDL conference in Corfu (Greece) on October 1st 2009, are available at the workshop website:

Among the topics covered are: a vocabulary bank; a SKOS encoding and web service, offering a bilingual economics thesaurus; UK projects experimenting with tag recommenders; evaluations of the information retrieval effects of a large number of pairs of mapped vocabularies; user interfaces for search term recommendation and query expansion; the development of the new thesaurus standard ISO 25964; the creation of faceted structures in a section of UDC and management issues in networked KOS as experienced with the same classification system.

A short report by Traugott Koch has been published in D-Lib Magazine.

This year's workshop invites proposals for both presentations and for posters. They should include aims, methods, and main findings in approximately 500 words for presentations and 200 words for posters. Submission deadline is the 19th June.

In keeping with the last year's successful event the MetaKnowledge Mash-up 2007, BCS KIDMM and ISKO UK have joined efforts to put up this follow-up event.

Knowledge management professionals know that much of the knowledge which drives a successful organization derives from its communities, both formal and informal; and that knowledge can be used and shared more easily if it is organized.

In many organizational contexts, be they businesses, government departments, professional associations and social enterprises, a lot of the most useful knowledge is not contained in documents and other written forms; it is in peoples' heads. Before knowledge organization can begin, there is already the challenge of eliciting and formulating what people know. What are the methods and tooks that can help in these processes?

Social networking technologies may be part of the answer. They are also causing a re-examination of the role of formal KO and its relationship to less formal approaches such as folksonomy and social tagging. People are asking: In what circumstances should formal KO apply, and where might an informal approach be better?; and: Perhaps they could work together? Arguably, they already do, since we organize as we speak or write, at the very least by constructing comprehensible sentences, but also through our choice of words, of implicit categorization and of metaphor.

So, if KO is at work the instant we open our mouths or tap on a keyboard, how and to what degree should we formalize it in our communities, whether face-to-face or virtual? Perhaps different techniques apply in each circumstance?

These are some of the questions surrounding KM and KO in the Web 2.0 age that we hope will be raised and discussed on October 9th. The speakers have been selected because they have case-study stories to tell, and there will also be participative round-table exercises. If we can also find some answers, that will be a bonus!

CFP: NKOS 2007 workshop at ECDL 2007

The 6th European NKOS Workshop will take place on September 21st, as part of ECDL 2007 in Budapest. It builds on the previous NKOS Workshops at ECDL 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. Proposals are invited for presentations (typically 20 minutes plus discussion time, potentially longer if the substance and importance warrant it) on work or projects related to the themes of the workshop or to NKOS more generally.

Presentations from the Workshop may be invited to submit as extended papers to the electronic peer reviewed journal: Journal of Digital Information, JoDI.

Please email proposals (approx. 500 words including aims, methods, main findings) by June 29th to Douglas Tudhope (dstudhope@glam.ac.uk). Advance indication that you intend to submit a presentation would be helpful. Proposals will be peer-reviewed by the program committee and notification of acceptance will be given by July 17th. The early registration deadline for the conference and the workshop is July 31st.

The JISC Repositories Support Project (RSP) is delighted to announce the launch of the UK’s first summer school for prospective and new managers of institutional and subject repositories.

This unique three day residential course will deliver a comprehensive overview of the practical challenges and solutions to effective repository implementation. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in scholarly debates on current repository theory and gain hands-on experience with repository software and tools. A range of interactive seminars, practical workshops, lectures and panel sessions will be delivered by a range of expert practitioners drawing from projects such as DAEDALUS, TARDIS, SHERPA, Repository Bridge and the RSP. These focused sessions will be supplemented by a series of networking sessions and social engagements, all of the delightful surroundings of Dartington Hall.

CFP - First International Workshop on "Digital Libraries Foundations"

Call for Papers:
First International Workshop on "Digital Libraries Foundations", Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, June 23, 2007.
In conjunction with ACM IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL 2007).
The workshop will bring together researchers involved in laying the foundations for the digital library research field. In particular, it will make it possible for them to discuss and explore their solutions in the context of a Reference Model for Digital Libraries. The workshop will engage the international digital library community in producing a reference framework wherein new results can be integrated, compared, and discussed - leveraging prior work on the definition of a Reference Model for Digital Libraries launched by the EU DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries.

ISKO News Section - include commercial events?

I know that I am not the only one among ISKO UK's membership, but I am a member of the North American taxonomy mailing list TaxoCop. This list is primarily oriented towards the role of taxonomies (and related approaches to structuring information) in the corporate information environment. There is an associated Wiki. The list is run by Seth Earley of Earley and Associates, whose business is taxonomy building and deployment, although TaxoCop is not run as a commercial operation.

From time to time, the TaxoCop community run conference calls on specific topics. Some of these are free, but more often they cost USD50 per person (plus the call costs, of course). TaxoCop have announced such a conference call for March 28th, entitled 'Taxonomy and KM'. I am wondering if we wish to carry notices of such items in the News section on the ISKO site?

Although the TaxoCop conference calls are charged, they are not really commercial events, and may therefore qualify to appear in our News section. However, there are a number of events around the topic of taxonomies which are run as commercial events, such as the Taxonomy conferences which Ark Group (used to?) run, and the very interesting sessions at the Online Conference last November involving Joseph Busch, Jayne Dutra, Tom Reamy and others. Should we carry news items for such commercial events also, where they are relevant?

I have no wish to interfere with editorial policy for our Web site, but it seems to me that we need to clarify our position in this respect. What do other members think?
